Year-End Highlights from DSU Heritage Foundation

Updated: 2 days ago

As 2024 comes to an end, the DSU Heritage Foundation (DSU HF) reflects on a year of achievements and milestones.

A New Era for Agriculture and Rodeo

Ground was broken on the long-anticipated agriculture building renovation that will include a state-of-the-art indoor rodeo arena. This modern facility will be a testament to the commitment of our donors and supporters who believe in advancing both rodeo and agricultural education at Dickinson State University (DSU).

2024 Alumni Honorees and Award Recipients

The DSU community celebrated its 2024 Alumni Honorees, recognizing outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions in their respective fields and communities.

  • Jami Arnold ’08 | School of Professional Studies

  • Steve Merrigan ’92 | School of Applied Science

  • Gary Wilz ’85 | School of Education

  • Tom Wyckoff ’87 | School of Business and Entrepreneurship

  • Matt Perdue ’16 | 2024 Young Hawk Award

  • Richard and Kayleen Wardner ’66 | 2024 Golden Hawk Award

  • Shirley Dukart | 2024 Blue Feather Award

Remembering Pete Fredericks

This year, we mourned the passing of Pete Fredericks, a rodeo legend and a cherished member of the DSU family. Fredericks was the co-founder of DSU’s first rodeo team, helped launch intercollegiate rodeo in North Dakota, and founded the National All Indian Rodeo

STEM World Peace Camp

The DSU Heritage Foundation proudly supported the STEM World Peace Camp, an initiative begun by DSU faculty member Sarah Crossingham. The innovative camp inspired 20 elementary-age students to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while fostering global understanding and peace.

Celebrating Excellence in Education

DSU alumnus Kendall Bergrud (’12) was named the 2024 North Dakota Teacher of the Year. Bergrud’s dedication to education and his ability to inspire his students reflect the high caliber of educators produced by DSU.

Reaching the $60 Million Mark

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we surpassed the $60 million mark in donations. This milestone underscores the incredible support of alumni and friends who believe in DSU’s mission.

Leadership Transitions

President Steve Easton (’80) announced his retirement after four and a half years of dedicated service to DSU. As we bid him farewell, we welcomed DSU HF Director Ty Orton into his added leadership role as Acting President. The search for a new president is underway, and we are confident the next chapter will bring continued success to the university.

The Rough Rider Cross Country Meet

The Inaugural Rough Rider Cross Country Meet showcased a stunning course of buttes, canyons, and ravines, offering a unique and historic challenge to athletes. Organized by Head Coach Shayne Wittkopp, alumnus and ranch owner Wally Owen, and the DSU Heritage Foundation, the event drew six teams and more than 350 attendees.

Edmund and Sylvia Morris Collection Arrives

The Morris Collection is the first significant physical archive, in terms of size and relevance, at DSU’s Theodore Roosevelt Center. The collection will attract external researchers building on the Center’s reputation as a world-leading academic institution for the study of Theodore Roosevelt.

Moose on the Loose

Since joining the office in January 2024, Moose, a Shorkie, has brought joy and energy to the DSU Heritage Foundation. His friendly greetings and calming presence have made him a staff favorite, enhancing morale and fostering a sense of community.
